The importance of water for athletes becomes more important for a person of regular physical activity. Athletes who participate in energy, endurance events related high ( like marathons ) must learn how to control their water consumption carefully.

For athletes of this caliber , the most important nutritional need is water. Controls the temperature of the water body and maintains the muscles working costs . Water also acts as a lubricant for joints and muscles. Lack of proper hydration can affect athletic performance and in severe cases , can lead to serious illnesses such as heat stroke and even death. Athletes also need to replace electrolytes like sodium , lost during the activity . Although sports drinks are popular among athletes, the immediate need is pure water. Sports drinks tend to have high sugar levels and can even interfere with the absorption of water. Sodium can easily be added later, as during a meal after the event is over .

The best way to fight against dehydration is to practice prevention. Drink 2 cups water 2 hours before an event can help prevent fluid loss.
